Prof. Heiner Wedemeyer

Heiner Wedemeyer is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School since April 1, 2020. He was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Clinic Essen from February 2018 to April 2020.

He received his medical degree from the University of Göttingen in 1996 and subsequently started his training in Internal Medicine at Hannover Medical School in Germany. From 1998 to 2000, he was a research fellow in immunology at the Liver Diseases Branch, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. Since 2001, he completed his training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Hannover Medical School, where he became Professor of Medicine in 2011.

Professor Wedemeyer has been involved in the scientific coordination of the German Network of Competence on Viral Hepatitis (Hep-Net) and the German Liver Foundation for more than 15 years. Currently, he serves as the Managing Director of the German Hepatitis C-Registry. Heiner Wedemeyer is member of several scientific organizations and was Secretary General of the European Association for the Study of the Liver from 2009 to 2011.

Professor Wedemeyer has a long-term research interest in liver diseases with a main focus on viral hepatitis, liver transplantation and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has been principal investigator in numerous clinical trials, focusing on antiviral therapy and immunotherapy of viral hepatitis B, C, D and E. He has authored over 360 original articles; his current Hirsch-Index is 90 (google scholar; January 2020) and his work has been quoted more than 37.000 times.

Heiner Wedemeyer has received numerous awards including the Hans Popper Award of the International Association of the Study of the Liver in 2002, the Innovation Award of the German Medical Faculties (2011) and the Rudolph-Schoen-Awards (2011). His research has been funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the German Ministry of Research and Education, the European Union, the European Association for the Study of the Liver and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Professor Carel le Roux

Professor Carel le Roux graduated from medical school in Pretoria South Africa, completed his specialist training in metabolic medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospitals and the Hammersmith Hospitals. He obtained his PhD from Imperial College London where he later took up a faculty position. He moved to University College Dublin for the Chair in Experimental Pathology and he is now a Director of the Metabolic Medicine Group. He also holds the position of Professor of Metabolic Medicine at Ulster University. He currently coordinates an Innovative Medicine Initiative project on obesity. He previously received a President of Ireland Young Researcher Award, Irish Research Council Laurate Award, Clinician Scientist Award from the National Institute Health Research in the UK, and a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship for his work on how the gut talks to the brain.

Professor Jessica Zucman-Rossi

Jessica Zucman-Rossi is Professor of Medicine at University of Paris, within the department of Oncology at the European Hospital Georges Pompidou (AP-HP). She is the director of the Cordeliers Center of Research and of the team “Functional Genomics of Solid Tumors”, with a focus on liver, mesothelial and viral induced tumors. Her group was pioneer in the elucidation of the molecular classification of benign and malignant liver tumors. Currently, she is President of the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) and she acts as Editor in Chief for the new EASL open access journal “JHEP Reports”.

Arun J. Sanyal, M.D

Arun J. Sanyal, M.D., is a Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Molecular Pathology in the Division of Gastroenterology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Sanyal also serves as Chairman of the NIH NASH Clinical Research Network, the NIMBLE consortium and the Liver Forum for NASH and fibrosis. His research interests include all aspects of NAFLD and NASH as well as complications of cirrhosis and end stage liver disease. He has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1995 and has over 350 peer reviewed publications with a H-index of 116.  He was also recently ranked in top 0.01% of medical scientists based on their impact on the field (PlosBio 2019).  He has served in several leadership roles nationally and globally including Chair of the Hepatobiliary Pathophysiology Study Section of the NIH, Secretary and then President of the American Association for Study of Liver Disease, founding member of the American Board of Internal Medicine Transplant Hepatology board examination and member of WHO advisory council on viral hepatitis.  He is the co-founder and academic chair of the Liver Forum which is a platform to bring regulatory agencies (FDA and EMA) with industry and academics to accelerate drug development for NASH and advanced liver disease.  He is currently engaged in numerous clinical trials and leads several phase 2B and 3 trials for NASH as well as complications of end stage liver disease. His contributions have been recognized by receiving the Distinguished Mentorship Award from the American Gastroenterological Association and the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the American Liver Foundation in 2017 and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the AASLD in 2018.

Professor Dr. Thomas Berg is Head of the Division of Hepatology, Department of Medicine II, at the Leipzig University Medical Center, Germany, and Chair of the University Liver Tumor Center, and Vice-Chair of the University Liver Transplant Center Leipzig.
He is Secretary General of the European Associations for the Study of the Liver (EASL), Board member of the EASL International Liver Foundation (EILF) and served the Journal of Hepatology as Co-Editor between 2014 and 2019.
He has published more than 440 articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 100 reviews and textbook contributions. His h-index is 76 (Scopus).
