  Dr. Nikhil Thapar

Biography
Dr. Thapar is the Academic Lead for Gastroenterology at UCL Institute for Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He undertook his undergraduate medical training at Southampton University before going on to complete his MRCPCH and postgraduate Paediatric training in the Wessex region followed by subspecialist training in Paediatric Gastroenterology in London. He has a particular interest in neurogastroenterology and gut motility disorders and has completed a PhD at the National Institute for Medical Research, London studying the therapeutic potential of stem cells for gut motility disorders. Following completion of the PhD in 2004 (University of London), he was awarded a Clinician Scientist post at the UCL Institute of Child Health and subsequently a Senior Lectureship. In 2006 was appointed as honorary consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.  With Drs Lindley and Borrelli, Dr Thapar runs a specialist clinical service for children with congenital and acquired gut motility disorders, which includes state-of-the-art diagnostics, in-patient and out-patient facilities. The service is a designated national centre for the diagnosis and management of severe gut diseases including intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Dr Thapar also leads a research team, which is closely integrated with the clinical service. He currently chairs the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) Gut Motility Disorders Working Group and sat on the BSPGHAN council as research lead. He is the Paediatric (ESPGHAN) representative on the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) ‘Future Trends Committee’. Dr Thapar is a member of the sub-specialty clinical studies group of the Medicines for Children Research Network and is involved in the development of clinical research networks across Europe. Dr Thapar is keenly involved in education and is co-executive director of the Academy of Paediatric Gastroenterology (www.a-p-g.org) and on the teaching faculty of ESPGHAN.
