Welcome

Polyelectrolytes are highly charged polymer chains formed in aqueous solution by dissociation of their charged units. Many essential biological macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, polysaccharides and other biopolymers are polyelectrolytes, and polyelectrolytes are involved in almost any cellular biological process. Protein molecules can also be regarded as polyelectrolytes as they usually contain polar as well as positive and negative charged groups. Furthermore, many synthetically-produced polyelectrolytes exist with important technological applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food and biomedical industries.

The objective of the symposium is to bring together senior scientists and young researchers, as well as students, working in the field to present their upmost recent results. Current challenges will be highlighted in order to

promote collaborative efforts from complementary disciplines. The range of topics in the workshop sessions will include presentations on basic polyelectrolyte science in biological context, interactions of polyelectrolytes at biological interfaces, polyelectrolyte complexation and self-assembly, and polyelectrolytes in biomedical applications and diagnostics.

At the conference we will celebrate the centennial birthday of Aharon Katzir (Katchalsky), 1914-1972, one of Israel's most reknown scientist who made seminal contributions to polyelectrolytes.

We look forward to see you here in Israel at January 2014!

On behalf of the scientific committee,
Dr. Roy Beck
