Polyelectrolytes are highly charged polymer chains formed in aqueous solution by dissociation of their charged units. Many essential biological macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, polysaccharides and other biopolymers are polyelectrolytes, and polyelectrolytes are involved in almost any cellular biological process. Protein molecules can also be regarded as polyelectrolytes as they usually contain polar as well as positive and negative charged groups. Furthermore, many synthetically-produced polyelectrolytes exist with important technological applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food and biomedical industries.
